Rescuing books from the trash to give all children the possibility of reading
The 53-year-old garbage collector, José Gutiérrez, is working hard to ensure that all children can read. Gutierrez began "to rescue books from the trash almost 20 years ago, when he was driving a garbage truck at night through the richest neighborhoods of the capital." Due to the large number of abandoned books, Gutiérrez was able to create an "impromptu library stacked ... with about 20,000 books" in his own home.
